First, it was pseudoephedrine. Now, more meth making ingredients have officials in Indiana on edge.
As you know, pseudoephedrine, commonly known as Sudafed, is sold behind the counter and there are restrictions on how much you can buy.
Now, another item could be added to that list.
Instant cold packs used to treat injuries are being used to make meth.
Police here see it frequently, but a Gibson County, Indiana prosecutor is taking action asking retailers to consider moving the items behind the counter. In the meantime, he wants them to keep a close eye.
Indiana State Police First Sergeant Dan McCay says, “I can understand why the prosecutor is asking for it. It’s the primary method by which people are making their own anhydrous ammonia for their meth manufacturer. The cold medicine is the other primary ingredient.”
Pharmacists say since restrictions in place on how much pseudoephedrine people can buy, there's been less demand.
Josh Gold says, ‘You have to be 18, have a valid state issued ID and we'll take your id and run it through a machine that's records are owned by the state police. That keeps track of how much you can buy and how often you buy. There are limits. You can only buy 3 grams for ten days.”
Parents say this can be an issue.
Patti Reinhardt says, “If you have a family of six, you have to go back three times for sinus pills.”
Reinhardt was shocked to hear cold packs could now be moved behind store counters, at least in Southern Indiana.
Reinhardt says, “Just one more restriction, one more line you've got to stand in for things.”
All the talk about the cold pack trend has others thinking like law makers.
Renee Kitt says, “I guess if they use it to make meth, it's not a bad idea.”
