A total of 31 candidates have applied for a single open seat on the South Bend School Board of Trustees.
A vacancy on the board was created when Stephanie Spivey resigned. Spivey's at-large term runs through the end of 2012.
Today at noon marked the deadline for candidates to signal their interest--and a total of 31 did.
The list includes at least one former school board president, Marcia Hummel, who spent 16 years on the school board.
Hummel tells News Center 16 that she simply wants to fill out the remainder of the term, and has no interest in running for another in November. Hummel feels her experience would allow her to hit the ground running, while any inexperienced candidate would face a long learning curve.
Also on the list of candidates is a former member of the Indiana State Board of Education, Paul McFann.
All 31 candidates will be interviewed next week, and it'll be up to a majority of the six trustees to settle on a replacement.
