It's a costly treatment for emotionally disturbed children, that's being cut back.
By the end of this month nearly 30 children staying at "The Children's Campus" in Mishawaka will be forced to leave.
It's part of state cuts across the board that other mental health providers, like Oaklawn, say come as no surprise. Cuts have been made these past couple of years already.
At Oaklawn, the county's mental health care provider, leaders have been working under a tight budget for the past couple of years. They provide residential therapy for about 40 children.
Although they could accept a few more patients, it's unlikely the center could take in many more.
By the end of the month The Children's Campus in Mishawaka expects to close 5 of their 12 treatment programs and be forced to release 28 children from their care. Leaders say reimbursement rates from the Indiana Department of Child Services were cut by 30 percent.
“Residential care is very costly,” explains Oaklawn’s Vice President Organizational Advancement Daniel Peck. “These families, these kids who are in residential care have very severe, very difficult issues they are dealing with, and they require supervision 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.”
There are 87 children staying at The Children's Campus right now. Once 28 leave, a third of the patient base will be cut.
About a third of their staff will also be let go when 27 employees are laid off.
