Deputies in Marshall County are hopefully getting some rest tonight after a busy afternoon of accidents that forced almost an entire shift to stay late.

The first two were on US 31 at the US 30 interchange.

A 60-year-old man flipped his motorcycle. He was flown to an area hospital by medflight. Traffic was backed up for miles in both directions, causing a second accident. One driver from that accident was hospitalized with minor pain. The other took off, but was arrested a short time later.

Meanwhile, nearby on Michigan road, four cars were damaged south of 5B road. A car traveling south blew a tire and hit three oncoming vehicles, including a minivan. Fortunately no one was injured.

A few minutes later officers were called to Olive road where a pickup went into a tree. That driver was hospitalized for cuts and bruises.

Finally, on US 6 and Elm road, a man riding a moped was critically injured after police believe he didn't yield to an oncoming pickup truck. US 6 was shut down for about an hour while deputies investigated.

Even though the five accidents happened within a little more than an hour, Police say there doesn't appear to be any relation between them.

"It's just been really busy," said Officer Nick Laffoon of the Marshall County Sheriff's Department, speaking of the four more serious accidents. "For whatever reason decided to have four serious accidents all within an hour so we've been running pretty good. It's made it really hard for us to try and get around and get everything we need."

The motorcyclist from US 31 is listed in critical condition tonight. Police were unsure of the latest condition of the moped rider from US 6.
