Some would say he's just a kid but he caught the mayor's attention with his efforts to make an intersection safer.

Friday afternoon two new stop signs were put up in South Bend.

12-year-old Jordan Stein and his family say since living at the corner of Donmoyer and High near Stanley Clark School there have been nearly half a dozen serious accidents a year.

Jordan decided he would ask to upgrade the two-way stop into a four-way by writing letters to the mayor.

“I was concerned about my safety and I was little worried about crossing the street, and that they were zipping through,” says Jordan.

His parents originally tried asking for a four-way intersection in the past but failed.

This time Jordan started writing letters to Mayor Buttigieg before he was even in office. The letter writing campaign was in the works for about a year.

The Steins say drivers either blow the stop sign or speed on Donmoyer, creating a dangerous combination.

Friday Mayor Buttigieg and Jordan officially installed one stop sign together in hopes of cutting down on the number of accidents.

After studying the intersection the city engineer says there were eight accidents at the intersection last year.

That’s above normal for a neighborhood especially since there are three schools within three blocks.
