There are 212 miles of unbeatable sales riding along Michigan’s U.S. 12. The historic road has become a bargaining paradise with the eighth annual U.S. 12 garage sale underway until Sunday Aug, 15. Saturday proved a bit cooler than Friday, but still kept bargain hunters hot across the state from New Buffalo to Detroit. The garage sale is Michigan's longest and one of the nation’s largest with hundreds of vendors selling everything from antiques, collectibles, furniture and fresh produce.
"These sales are giving people the opportunity in the tough times we're facing right now. It’s a chance to come out and pick-up those items that people can use,” garage sale vendor Jess Minks said.
This is Minks forth year participating in the U.S. 12 garage sale. Although he could turn a profit with his sales, Minks donates his earning to homeless veterans in Niles.
"When they started the U.S. 12 yard sale, we jumped on the band wagon and started right away. It’s so much fun meeting the people and helping people at the same time,” Minks added.
Niles, Buchanan, Three Oaks and New Buffalo all have dozens of vendors. One family on their summer vacation spent their Saturday sifting through garage sale junk in hopes to find precious treasure.
"You never know what you're going to find. When you start digging through stuff you hope to find something unique and you don't even know what it will be,” Carla Ellis said alongside her son Corey Mckay. “Just digging through everyone's stuff that they no longer want or need, it's just kind of fun,” Ellis added.
