Last night’s storms left a lasting impression on some in the Town of Winamac.
A huge hail storm there damaged countless cars.
“I have a 2013 Chevy Cruze, I just got it about a month ago, so it’s not, at least I didn't put the first dent in it, that's the only good part of it,” said Jane Panici.
The car that Jane has had for about thirty days, now has thirty dimple-like dents. The car was parked in Winamac Wednesday night where hail stones the size of golf ball were par for the course.
“I look outside and they're good golf ball size and larger and I looked at my car and saw them hitting the car and bouncing and the one that hit in here somewhere bounced and flew up and I knew I was probably going to have some dents and I do,” said Panici. “You know, I’ve seen hail before but not that large.”
The hail was large enough to ‘test the metal’ of car dealers in the area. At Fred Allan Auto Center every car on the lot was damaged.
“Every car's got numerous dents, 15 to 20 dents,” said Brad Allen. “We had six windshields that got cracked, busted.”
One hail stone left a crop-circle-like crack in a car windshield. The crack formed a perfect circle that was about three to four inches in circumference.
“It’ll take a while, it’s going to be hard with being open with trying to sell vehicles that are dented up, but we contacted the insurance, agent will be out to assess the damage and just a matter of getting the windows repaired and getting the dents fixed,” said Brad Allen.
At least three dealerships reported that each and every car on the lot was damaged. That amounts to hundreds of vehicles.
To give you a sense for the size of the storm, those dealerships were about a mile and a half apart.
“It was falling straight down hard, it was like a hard rain but the big golf ball size rain drops. I never seen, I never seen nothing like it ‘cause it done it, you know, it wasn't just a minute or two and then it was gone, it done it for a good ten minutes,” said Winamac resident Terry Matthews.
