A Texas based company could bring up to 150 new jobs to a now vacant factory building near New Carlisle.

Tejas Tubular Products, Inc. has filed a tax abatement request with the St. Joseph County Council.

The company makes tubing for the oil and gas industries.

“Significant in terms of the number of new jobs and the amount of investment, it takes an empty building and makes it a full building, so what will happen over the course of the next month or two, they’ll navigate the local processes that they have to navigate for approval and hopefully at the end, then they’ll, we’ll have an exciting announcement about a new company here in St. Joseph County,” said President Jeff Rea of the St. Joseph County Chamber of Commerce.

Tejas Tubular has its eyes on the former Scott Brass building at Edison and Walnut Roads near New Carlisle.

The company not only wants to manufacture there—it plans to expand the plant and wants to bring in $12 million worth of new equipment.

As for the number of new jobs the company expects to create, “I don’t think they’ve determined totally that,” said Jeff Rea. “I think in their application they talked about close to 100 jobs to start with. It’s a manufacturing operation and certainly we have the reputation here for making things and it’s really easy to move product from here.”

Paperwork indicates that Tejas Tubular would pay an average wage of $18 per hour and that the company now pays up to $34 an hour based on experience.

A first reading will be held tonight on the tax abatement request filed with the St. Joseph County Council. Final consideration is anticipated in August.

“They certainly have been in other communities as well, they were attracted to this area location in particular the building is in great shape and is move-in ready, but still, a lot of things have to happen in the final negotiations related to the building and the incentives to make it work, but yeah, we’re very excited,” said Jeff Rea.
