Meet the South Bend Mayoral Candidates

It’s anybody’s race. For the first time in 24 years, none of the would-be mayors of South Bend are incumbents – and all of them are scrambling to prove they deserve your vote. With just weeks until the all-important primaries, six men are knocking on doors, debating each other and getting their “face time” wherever they can: on billboards, campaign signs, and even TV.

We wanted to take it past the face time – past the sound bite. So, over the last two months, we sat down with each candidate for a live and free-flowing interview on 16 Sunday Morning.

You’ll meet State Rep. Ryan Dvorak, who is in his fifth term in the General Assembly, and you’ll hear why he thinks voters are ready for a prosecutor and mayor with the same last name. You can contrast him with Pete Buttigieg, for instance, who was still an undergraduate when Dvorak was first elected – a relative newcomer who took the early fundraising lead and whose candidacy appears to be gaining momentum. Watch as we speak to Mike Hamann, a St. Joe County Council member and former Republican about his vision for South Bend’s future. And learn more about Barrett Barry, an ordained Reverend who says he plans to win the race.

Don’t count out the Republicans in this heavily Democratic city. Wayne Curry is a contractor who says his business experience is what qualifies him to lead. We will even speak to a relative unknown: Bill Davis, who will share his views on government and politics.

So go ahead, meet the candidates. Just click on a name and please enjoy the roughly 5-minute interview. We hope you get a better sense of who wants to lead South Bend.
