The latest attempt to put people back in the former LaSalle Hotel building in downtown South Bend has failed.
In June of 2011, a Kalamazoo based developer signed a purchase agreement for the LaSalle, with plans to create 60 apartments.
“We just decided to return the minor amount of earnest money to them just so we could appropriately entertain offers and move away from that exclusive agreement with Mavcon,” said Scott Ford, Director of South Bend Department of Community Investment.
Today, the agreement with Mavcon was terminated as the city set the stage to entertain other offers. “No, no, they're kicking the tires; we've gone through the building with a number of developers in recent months,” Ford.
The LaSalle has been vacant for at least a decade. It was last used by a church group, and its days as a hotel ended in the 1970’s.
