Trial begins for mother of children found locked in car trunk

In June of 2011, two young boys died from over exposure to the heat after they became trapped in the trunk of a car outside their home in New Carlisle.

Today, the mother, Jacqueline Wilk, went on trial on two counts of Class A Felony Neglect of a Dependent.

During opening statements, the prosecution claimed Wilk was downstairs at her parent’s home studying, Facebooking, or perhaps sleeping; and that the children were allowed to go upstairs to watch television.

The defense claims that the home was small and that a mere ten to 20 minutes passed before Wilk realized she no longer heard any sounds associated with the boys.

Wilk eventually found both children locked inside the trunk of a car outside the home and called 9-1-1. Both boys later died at the hospital.
Wilk’s attorney claims that the family had recently changed the locks in the home to prevent the boys from sneaking outside.

The prosecution today claimed a videotaped statement Wilk gave to police shortly after the incident indicates that the boys were known to sneak outside, loved to play in the trunk, and that Wilk had previously discovered her two year old son locked inside the trunk, “calling for help.”

The prosecution claimed that the deaths of two year old Isaac Dunner and four year old Dominick Wilk could have been prevented had Wilk simply locked the car.

Jurors were told they were not being asked to decide that Wilk was a bad person, or that she did not regret what happened.

Many of the potential jurors interviewed today were parents themselves.
At one time the defense had asked if any were “Helicopter Parents,” meaning the kind that constantly hovered over their children, and asked if “part of being a kid was being free to explore.”

Testimony is scheduled to begin on Tuesday morning. A total of 11 witnesses are expected to take the stand with the trial wrapping up Wednesday or Thursday.
