Indiana lawmakers today passed a pilot program to help students from low income families attend preschool.
Income eligible students will receive grants between $2,500 and $6,800. The pilot program could help up to 4,000 students in five counties attend private institutions.
The pilot counties will be determined later by the Indiana Department of Family and Social Services.
Eligible students must be at least four years old with a family of four income under $30,000. Indiana is one of only ten states in the U.S. that does not offer state funded preschool opportunities.
The bill now moves on to Governor Mike Pence for his consideration.
