Financial challenges continue to stack up for South Bend’s tallest building—the Chase Tower.
The Chase Tower is some $344,000 behind in its property tax payments to St. Joseph County.
That’s far enough behind to be on the list of properties to be auctioned at the county’s delinquent tax sale scheduled for Thursday of next week.
“This particular property has been in this very same position, maybe not the amounts being the same but all the other conditions are the same with a few days left before the deadline to make a payment, to remove themselves from the tax sale and it’s been done at least two other times,” said St. Joseph County Treasurer Sean Coleman.
The Chase Tower can avoid being part of the tax sale if its bill is paid by the close of business next Wednesday.
The Chase Tower is under the control of a court appointed receiver as part of a mortgage foreclosure case.
One South Bend Common Council member says they were told that attempts are still being made to sell the building.
