Another ND student housing complex proposed

The bedroom-building-boom appears likely to continue on the outskirts of the Notre Dame campus.

Yet another residential development has been proposed east of the university border.

The proposed complex calls for 266 additional beds.

“The good thing about having a lot of high density projects so close together is that it helps feed and maintain the commercial activity along 23 (State Road 23),” said Larry Maliozzi, Assistant Director of the St. Joseph Area Plan Commission. “You have, again, another 266 people that are going to be looking for services, a place to eat, a place to buy groceries, a place to fix their cars, or whatever.”

A three and a half acre lot has been assembled off Twyckenham Drive across the street from the Eck Tennis Center.

Five single family homes have been, or will be demolished to make way for the proposed development known as “The Overlook.”

Plans call for the construction of two separate four story buildings with 130 one-bedroom units, and 136 studio-units.

There are already student housing complexes to the north, south, and east of “The Outlook” while the neighbor to the west is the university itself.
A zoning change is needed to make the project a reality. The property is now zoned single family residential.

The St. Joseph County Area Plan Commission will hold a hearing on the request next Tuesday afternoon, July 16th at 3:30 p.m.

Plans call for the complex to be occupied by the start of the 2014-2015 academic year.
