9 story hotel/condo complex being built on Paw Paw River

They’re building another ‘nine’ at the Benton Harbor development known as Harbor Shores. This time, instead of nine holes, it’s ‘nine stories’ worth of hotel rooms and condominium units.

“It’s going to contain condominiums on the top two floors, four floors of hotel, being a four-star 92 room hotel, also we have 10,000 square foot convention and event center which, where we can have weddings, business meetings and so forth,” said Harbor Village Manager Ron Schults.”

The project also includes a marina with more than 100 boat slips.

Construction has started on the first of seven planned multi-story structures off Edgewater Driver on the banks of the Paw Paw River in Benton Harbor.

It’s the latest phase of the Harbor Shores project that began with the construction of a championship golf course.

“We're basically going to be the next large resort on Lake Michigan and we're in the best proximity to Chicago in particular in terms of that location. If you think of other resorts such as Kohler in Wisconsin, Bay Harbor in Petoskey,” said Harbor Village Manager Ron Schults.

The hotel will have a pool, spa and hot tub. It is slated to open by April 1st, in time to accommodate a convention of Rotarians, and the Senior PGA on Memorial Day Weekend.

The entire Harbor Village project will take five to ten years to complete and will include harbor homes and cottages.

“The project, total investment on the first part of the project is around $30 million. The total investment, taxable when the project is completed is estimated at $135 million,” said Schults.

Construction of the hotel and marina alone has created an estimated 487 direct and indirect jobs.

Some of the slips at the Harbor Village Marina will be big enough to accommodate boats up to 100 feet in length.

“For instance, the first sailboat that signed up is a 68 foot Nelson/Merrick that draws 11 feet; well he cannot go any harbor in St. Joe and even from the Great Lakes—Chicago, Holland, Muskegon and the next three ports,” said Schults. “This is going to put us in a spot on the map where we can have very large both power and sail boats and we’re already getting those calls in.”

If this type of luxury is out of your price range, at least you’ll get a free peek. There will be a public walking path along the waterfront of Harbor Village that will tie in to trials located near the golf course.
