Police in Dowagiac continue to investigate the shooting deaths of two people.
The bodies of 46-year-old Michael Simpson and 41-year-old Denise Simpson were found Monday night in a house in the 500-block of N. Front Street.
The two were husband and wife, although they had recently separated.
Police originally called the case an “apparent murder suicide,” although late Monday the prosecutor said all possibilities were being considered.
Those who live in the neighborhood where the shootings took place reacted with shock.
“Of course you see this on T.V. and read it in the newspapers, but not across the street, it’s a shock,” said neighbor Larry Melton.
The Schuurs live in the home immediately behind the scene of the crime.
According to Nan Schuur, “this wasn’t somebody just moving through, this is somebody that’s lived here his whole life. That makes it even worse, more of a shock.”
Nan’s husband David had known Mike Simpson, “pretty much my whole life.” David Schuur said he never expected anything like this to happen.
Neighbors say that Michael Simpson worked as a truck driver and that Denise Simpson worked at a medical office.
While police continue to investigate a possible murder/suicide scenario, today Cass County Prosecutor Victor Fitz simply said that “all options are being considered.”
The last murder to take place in Dowagiac apparently dates back to the spring of 1999.
