Two Hospitals May Vye for Blood Donors

There may be some bad blood between the South Bend Regional Medical Foundation and Memorial Hospital.

As of July first, Memorial is using a new blood bank, the Indiana Blood Center out of Indianapolis.

The South Bend Medical Foundation sent out letters to all its blood donors regarding the switch and assuring them that their blood is still needed.

Blood donated to the foundation will still be used here in Michiana.

Memorial Hospital will have their blood distributed from down state.

Jeanna Pugh, a blood donor recruiter says, "That's what's different with South Bend Medical Foundation is that we haven't changed. We've been the community lab and blood bank for years and so we're still going to be that for everyone here. What's collected at South Bend Medical Foundation will stay here and it will go to help save the lives of your family and friends."

We talked with the president of Memorial Hospital, Phil Newbold, and about their new blood bank.

He says having two blood centers gives Michiana more options and allows memorial to reach other areas of the community.
