One person is dead and several fire departments are on the scene of a very large fire at the V.I.M. Recycling Plant in Elkhart County.
The worker who died in the explosion is 53-year-old Jose Espiridion Garcia Olivera, from Elkhart.
A second worker is suffering 3rd degree burns, while a third worker who was also inside the plant is doing well.
The fire started about 10:30 pm on Thursday after reports came in of an explosion at the plant.
The plant is located on Old U.S. 33 near the Elkhart/ St. Joseph County line.
The entire building was consumed in flames.
For several hours, dispatchers continued to call more fire departments to the scene to help fight the fire.
V.I.M. Recycling has been the scene of at least two fires in the past four years.
Twenty-one fire departments were called to a mulch fire there in 2003 and in 2005 another fire broke out at the facility.
