Could Indiana’s cigarette tax hike be priceless when it comes to reducing teen smoking?
On July first, the state cigarette tax is slated to go up by 44-cents a pack.
A portion of the proceeds will be used to fund anti-smoking education programs.
Furthermore, young people are said to be the least likely to be able to afford cigarettes after the tax hike.
“Kids have less disposable income and the price of cigarettes now is going to be what, over four dollars,” said Marily Eber of Healthy Communities of St. Joseph County.
According to the estimates of Indiana Tobacco Prevention and Cessation, nine percent of teen smokers in Indiana will quit because of the higher tax.
Only two percent of adult smokers are expected to do so.
