Last minute mailers are keeping postal workers as busy as Santa's elves before the toy drop. Monday the US Postal Service accepted 900 million pieces of mail. It was their busiest drop off day of the year.

With most of that mail being 2-day delivery, Wednesday became the year's busiest distribution day. “I feel a little like Santa’s Elf,” says Allan Taylor, a mail carrier of 20 years. “Sometimes people are alone for the holidays and the parcels they get are important to them.”

Sometimes the letters they send are even more important than the ones they receive, at least that was the case for one Michiana woman who sent a letter to St. Nick asking for something very unusual.

“Dear Santa,” reads Bob Craft, who handles the letters for South Bend. “I usually never ask for anything, but I really want a husband; someone nice and kind, and someone on my side. I am very lonely and I deserve someone to be there for me.”

A few days ago Craft received a received a follow-up letter from that lonely lady. “Dear St. Nicholas, Thank you very much for the fun weekend and the cute guy I finally met. You really came through for me this year!”

You may be wondering how the Postal Service delivers last minute “Dear Santa” letters to the big guy in time for his Christmas Eve ride, it’s mail deliver magic.

“Magic, just like Santa. We have magic mail trucks,” says Craft.

Procrastinators still need to get it in gear, since the last day for postal delivery before Christmas is Saturday

“Mail sent by Thursday to our far extents, the east coast and west coast, will still be delivered by Saturday,” explains Dean McCool of the South Bend Post office. “If it's mailed on Friday it's going to have to be reasonably local.”

Remember, even magic mail trucks break for the holidays.
