Zaire confident he can win the Notre Dame starting quarterback job

For most, its a forgone conclusion that Everett Golson will be Notre Dame's starting quarterback in 2014. After all, he did lead the Irish to the BCS National Championship game in 2012 before missing all of 2013 due to an academic suspension from the university.

But Brian Kelly has insisted that its an open competition between Golson and sophomore Malik Zaire, who redshirted last year and has yet to play a single down of college football.

But if there's one guy that is confident that Malik Zaire can win the starting quarterback job, it's Malik Zaire. He's not cocky about it, he's just confident. The lefty throwing QB sports a swagger and attitude coaches want in a quarterback--the type of guy who believes in himself.

Zaire was asked Friday if he believes he can be the team's starting quarterback come September.

"Yes without a doubt," Zaire said. "There will only be one guy starting August 30th against Rice at Notre Dame Stadium. There will only be one guy on the field and I believe that will be me."

Zaire of course will have to overcome the fact that Golson is a proven commodity on the field. Malik knows that's a tough task.

"It's always going to be an up hill battle at the end of the day going against a guy who has been there and done that in a sense," Zaire said of overtaking Golson. "Being that its an open competition, there are definitely some challenges I will have to overcome to get there. It's not going to be an easy ride."

Notre Dame is in the early stages of spring practice and will play their annual Blue-Gold Game on April 12th.
