Women arrested for trafficking with an offender at an area jail

An officer who served Indiana’s prison system for over 12 years, is now behind bars for trafficking.

Shalawn Johnson, 40, of Merrillville reported for work at the Westville Correctional Facility Saturday evening.

When she got there, she was stopped and searched by other officers, who found she had a cell phone. Officers say she planned to give the phone to an inmate.

She was arrested on one count of trafficking with an offender, a class C felony, and taken to LaPorte County Jail.
