Woman killed in Thanksgiving morning fire

There is some devastating news for a Michiana family on this Thanksgiving. A woman is dead after a house fire early Thursday morning.

Crews were called to a home in the 19000-block of Darden Road in St. Joseph County just before 1:30 a.m.

The husband was already outside when they arrived. Firefighters went in to rescue his wife but were unable to. She died at the scene.

"He was always aware of when she was up and moving around to try and make sure that he was helping her and so it’s obviously going to be very tough for him because he was kind of like the caregiver for her,” said Clay Fire Marshal Dave Cherrone. “You know, keep this gentleman and his family in your prayers because again obviously it’s tough any day but it’s always hard when it's a holiday.”

Officials believe the woman was in her early 60's. Her name hasn’t been released.

The husband was treated on the scene and is ok. As with all fatal fires, someone from the state fire marshal’s office is aiding in the investigation.
