If your holiday break plans included a trip to a St. Joseph County Park for winter sports, you’ll have to think again.
The start date for the winter sporting season at St. Patrick’s Park and Ferrettie-Baugo Creek County Park have been delayed due to the mild weather.
Their original opening date was scheduled for Dec. 26.
St. Patrick’s Park offers visitors the chance to go inner-tubing or cross-country skiing. Visitors at Ferrettie-Baugo can enjoy inner-tubing and snow-shoeing activities.
Since both locations need to see significant snowfall, directors at St. Joseph County Parks say it’s unknown when they’ll be able to open.
Inner-tubing activities at both locations need eight inches of natural snowfall. Both parks own snow making equipment, but those can only be used for inner-tubing courses. The region also has to have an average temperature at or below 20 degrees Fahrenheit to produce the fake snow.
It is not possible to make snow for the cross-country ski and snow shoe trails. Once the region sees the required eight inches of snowfall, the park maintenance crew will need two days to get the trails ready.
