A water main break on the corner of Edison Avenue and Sample Street caused crews to get right to work Tuesday.
Crews arrived around 7:30 Tuesday morning. They knew it was a water main break because of the running water that had surfaced.
Officials say the damage was worse than they thought and brought in more people to help. They said it would take about four to eight hours to fix. But they did say breaks like these are normal during the winter.
“The water mains are cast iron and once the ground starts shifting that is when they start cracking,” explains Robert Krol of South Bend Water. “They Normally start cracking in the water mains. This one is just a little out of character for us.”
Krol said the break would affect about 20 homes in the area. He also said the water could be discolored but there is nothing to worry about. They will test the water in the next few days to make sure it is safe.
