A Warsaw man is in serious condition after a moped crash Wednesday afternoon.

Robert L. Hawley, 84, was found in the roadway just north of Claypool on County Road 50 west being attended to by family members, according to Kosciusko County Sheriff’s deputies. Hawley was airlifted to the hospital due to head injuries from the crash.

Investigators tell Newscenter 16 that Hawley was traveling northbound on County Road 50 west driving his 1964 red Allstate 788 moped/scooter when a German shepherd entered the roadway. Hawley was unable to avoid colliding with the dog and was thrown from the moped.

Hawley was taken to Parkview Regional Medical Center in Fort Wayne. He is listed in serious condition.

The owner of the 93 lb. German shepherd ran the dog back into the house but there is no word on its condition, according to Sgt. Chad Hill.
