Warming centers continue into Tuesday

South Bend Michiana continues to deal with dangerously cold temperatures Tuesday. This area has seen freezing temperatures before, but overnight temperatures felt like -30 degrees when you factor in wind chill.

This is the second time we have seen this this year.

Thanks to these conditions the following was released Sunday by the St. Joseph County Emergency Management Agency:

“Saint Joseph County Indiana is partnering with the City of South Bend to open warming shelters as needed starting Monday.
The Martin Luther King Center will be available on a 24-hour basis as needed for sheltering. The O’Brien Center will be open as a warming shelter during normal hours.”

These facilities will be used as a backup facility for homeless centers in the area who handle the majority of the homeless, so these centers provide a place for people who either can’t make it to a homeless center, are having problems with keeping their homes warm or just need a place to warm up for a few hours.

Now, several homeless centers are working around the clock to keep as many people warm as they can and the Center for the Homeless is one of them.

They are currently working at full capacity, helping more than 225 people on its site. They say, “This winter has been especially hard on those without shelter. The frigid temperatures are so dangerous, we are trying to help as many as possible. Luckily, other agencies in our community are fighting the same cause. Although we can't fit everyone who needs shelter, we try to outfit everyone that comes in with a hat and gloves if we have them available. We try to do as much as we can!”

During this time resources are running thin. All agencies could use outerwear, especially hats and gloves, socks, underwear, blankets, pillows, and hygiene supplies.
