Every student in every classroom got to say goodbye to a long time physical education teacher retiring this year.
After 42 years at Walt Disney Elementary Steve Govorko is retiring.
He started there when the school first opened back in 1972.
He says it's been a “dream job.”
Friday all of the students in various classrooms sang songs and read poems, thanking him for his hard work.
The Mayor of Mishawaka sent a letter over to the school, proclaiming it Steve Govorko day. The teachers put together a surprise going away celebration.
Govorko says he still doesn't know exactly how he feels about saying good-bye.
“I used to love after church, coming to school and planning for the whole week,” he says. “I was so excited about doing things and not all my plans are successful but just reading and I know I'm going to miss that and working with the kids. That's the bottom line, there’s nothing greater than when a kid runs up to you and says Mr. Govorko what are we doing in gym today??”
Govorko already teaches at Bethel College but he plans to pick up more classes this fall when he retires. He wants to write a booking on teaching physical education.
