Walmart to comply with South Bend on gun selling rules

The issue of assault weapons being sold at a South Bend Walmart is resolved.

Last week the Common Council contacted Walmart Legal, citing its Ireland Road store for breaking a deal it struck with the city.

The June 2011 agreement prevented the national retailer from selling assault weapons and ammunition in its South Bend stores. It also mandated all hunting gun cases be locked.

In a phone conference Monday, Walmart said it's working to fix the problem.

"They were glad we brought some of these issues to their acknowledgement, so we are working on paperwork now so we can get back into compliance to the safety issues, the type of ammunition," says South Bend Common Councilman Oliver Davis Jr.

Walmart is also considering reduced gun sale hours to further cooperate with city leaders.
