Walkerton man shot while pumping gas

A Walkerton man putting gas in his car, ended-up getting a bullet in his hand.

Gilbert Canul, 22, was standing in the Marathon gas station parking lot at the corner of Western Ave. and Olive St. around 3:56 p.m. Saturday.

That's when a Chrysler 300 with six hispanic men seated inside pulled-up beside him, and flashed gang signs.

The men displayed three weapons, including a black machine gun with a banana clip, and demanded Canul's coat, shoes and money. When he said no, the men opened fire, hitting Canul once in the hand.

According to the police report, Canul drove himself to a friend's house before being dropped off at the St. Joseph Regional Medical Center by his father.

South Bend police found shell castings in the gas station parking lot. Detectives are now using surveillance video to piece together a clearer suspect description.
