It was an emotional day in Sawyer, as Captain Mandy Coy was reunited with her nephew after being deployed to Afghanistan.

She went to River Valley Chikaming Elementary Cchool to see her nephew, but she also wanted to say “thank you” to all those in Mrs. Donner's second grade class.

They all wrote letters to Coy and the other soldiers in the 303rd MP Company over the past nine months.

Coy said that she would try to Skype with the kids, even though sometimes it wouldn't work.

She would also send postcards showing the culture in the area so they would learn about different places.

Given conditions in Afghanistan, Coy says the letters really helped.

“They actually helped a little bit. With everything going on there, the good and the bad, you would open up the letters from the kids and it made you realize that everything was still the same back home so you knew you were coming back to normal whatever that is,” says Captain Mandy Coy.

Coy told the kids a little about what life was like in the military as well as serving overseas.

She says she plans on going on another tour, but she is going to spend some time with her kids first.
