We continue to bring you the latest on a school bus crash that injured more than 50 students Wednesday in Kosciusko County.
Four buses were involved in the collision and deputies say the fourth bus hit the back of the third, which then caused a chain reaction.
They tell us Friday that lights were working on all of the buses, and there was no sign of a mechanical malfunction on any of them.
The driver in the fourth bus, John Wagoner remains in the hospital tonight, as his grandson shares insight into what may have happened.
“He told me that he got a call about a kid that was supposed to be on the bus or something and he looked up into the mirror,” says Jacob Morris, “right when he looked down, back at the window he put his arm out and turned and that’s what we think severed his kidney, was cause when he turned to get this girl out of the way. He saved this girl from going out the window”.
Morris continues, “Right when he woke up from surgery that’s all he thought about, that’s the first thing he asked is how the kids are”.
How are the kids?
“A couple of students have talked about; I am fearful of getting on the bus or I am fearful of riding in a car, could this happen in a car? And I pull out a newspaper and say it happens every day, this is an accident and just a bigger scale, with bigger vehicles,” says Wawasee High School guidance counselor, Paul Meyer, “when it comes to a lot of work ahead it's more providing them with the coping skills to look ahead and not just focus on one point in their life”.
For a man who has been driving a school bus since 1992,
“He was always very safe. He knew that there were kids on his bus you know that had to make it home, they had parents and stuff,” says Morris, “I don't know what he would do without that job, that’s, he loves driving the bus”.
WNDU spoke with a student who was in the fourth bus when the crash happened. She says she has face and leg injuries but says John Wagoner was a great bus driver. She says he is the type of guy who throws them pizza parties at the end of the year and even brought them donuts that morning.
The crash is still under investigation
