UPDATE: Meth lab explosion rocks Osceola boat house

The investigation into Tuesday night’s meth lab explosion continues Wednesday, as authorities try to figure out what happened and who was involved.

It happened at a boat house along the St. Joe River, in the 1000 block of Vistula Road, near Osceola.

Police were called out just before 8:30 p.m. for a fire at the house. When they arrived they only found smoke, and no one inside.

This home was being rented. Police told WNDU that they do have a person of interested and he is neither the homeowner nor the renter.

Fred Story was in his yard potting flowers when he heard a boom and a crash.

“We came running around and saw a little smoke rolling out of the house and ran down there and saw somebody leaving,” says Story.

According to police that person is a friend of the neighbors.

Police were told that the man was inside the home using the shower while the renter worked about 150 feet away. They say he then ran to the store and when he returned he saw smoke and his friend was gone.

“He doesn’t live here. He was just helping some people do some stuff; I guess they are working on that house up there. I don't know if he was involved in that,” Story continues, “from their description of the guy, he’s, he helped me put my pier in the river a few days ago”.

Story says he didn't catch the man’s name, but says he was very friendly and was shocked when he heard what happened.

Around 11 p.m. Tuesday night, police say they found the person of interest at the corner of Mishawaka Avenue and Oakland Street in South Bend.

They took him to Memorial Hospital where he was being treated for burns on his arms and upper body.

Officials say neighbors should not have any health effects from this. They did say that if there are pieces left outside or if anything was pulled out, those should not be touched because they could have a residue on them that could affect you.

The investigation is ongoing.
