A suspect has been arrested for the murder of an elderly Elkhart County woman.

A 17-year-old male was arrested on probable cause Sunday in connection with the alleged murder of 76-year-old Norma Hopper in her home on the 54000 of Michael Drive.

The Elkhart County prosecutor has confirmed that a probable cause hearing was held Monday for a 17-year-old male suspect.

The suspect is being held without bond, but has not been formally charged. Charges are expected by the end of the week.

Elkhart County deputies were called to Michael Dr. Friday morning, after Hopper was found dead in her house. While police have not said much, family members say Hopper was brutally stabbed and beaten.

A neighbor says they knew something was wrong Hopper’s blue Chevy Lumina went missing early Friday. The four door vehicle was located Sunday afternoon, but how or where it was discovered has not been announced.

In a media statement, Sheriff Brad Rogers said, “After a labor intensive weekend and hard work by our detectives, they were able to recover the reported missing vehicle and at the end of the day made the arrest for murder.”

The case, which was also investigated by the St. Joseph County Metro Homicide Unit and Goshen Police Department, is now being forwarded to the Elkhart County Prosecutor’s Office.

The name of the individual arrested will not be released until formal charges are filed.
