There is encouraging news for the Illinois boy who miraculously survived after being trapped in 11 ft. of sand last week.

Officials at Comer Children’s Hospital in Chicago say that Nathan Woessner, 6, got out of bed on Friday afternoon and was able to walk with assistance. He is also eating for the first time.

Thursday night his grandfather told our reporting partners at the Michigan City News Dispatch that Woessner was sitting up, watching cartoons and even talking. Doctors say the little boy remains in serious condition after being upgraded from critical condition on Thursday.

He is expected to make a full neurological recovery but may suffer lingering lung problems from sand inhalation.

Mount Baldy at the Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore remains closed as investigators try to determine how the boy became buried in the dune.
