Two teens crash into large tree, one airlifted to Memoral Hospital

Two teens were sent to the hospital Saturday after their car crashed into a tree in an Elkhart County neighborhood.

The wreck happened at 5:10 p.m. in the 57000 block of Keltner Road, about a mile east of the Elkhart City limits.

Martin Olais, 16, of Elkhart, was driving his red 2002 Honda Civic north along the narrow street, when he crossed over into the southbound lane and hit the trunk of a large tree.

While the investigation is still ongoing, neighbors who heard the collision say speed may be to blame.

“I was in my living room sitting on my chair and watching TV, and I heard a car coming really fast over the hill,” explains Eleanore Linn who lives at the home where it happened. “Just really, extremely fast, and as it went past my house, I saw it curving in towards my driveway, and as soon as that happened, I heard a loud bang, boom.”

Olais, who was wearing a seatbelt, was taken to Elkhart General Hospital with a broken femur. His passenger, Marco Fernandez, 16, of Goshen, was airlifted by MedFlight to Memorial Hospital for pain in his arm and abdomen.

No citations have been issued yet, however the investigation is ongoing.
