Five stabbed in South Bend

St. Joseph County Metro Homicide is investigating after five people were stabbed in a South Bend home Thursday night.

Police say a call came in around 9:40 p.m. for a home invasion in the 1000 block of North Michigan Street.

When they arrived, the suspects were attempting to flee the scene.

Armed with assault weapons, officers were able to apprehend five young adults and took them in for questioning.

Meanwhile, other officers found five stabbing victims inside the home.

They range in age from a teen to an elderly adult; their injuries range from superficial to life-threatening.

All five victims were transported to the hospital via ambulance.

Police say there were other people inside the home during the attempted burglary who escaped unharmed.

"There were other individuals that hid in the house consisting of young adults, as well as an adult," said South Bend Police Division Chief Gary Horvath. "They were able to use a cell phone to call authorities. That's why we put it out as a burglary in progress. Officers were able to come here based on the fact there were other individuals in the house that weren't harmed that were able to call for assistance."

Police believe they've caught all of the suspects involved with the stabbing.

One reportedly tried to flee by jumping out of one of the home's windows.

Because of the extent of some of the victims' injuries, South Bend Police turned the scene over the St. Joseph County Metro Homicide, who continue to investigate.
