One teenager died and another was seriously injured after a crash in Elkhart County Tuesday night.

It happened in the 29000 block of Old U.S. 33 around 10 p.m. It was about halfway between Osceola and Elkhart.

The driver, 17-year-old Nichole M. Besemer, had never received a license.

Rescuers had to use the Jaws of Life to pull out her passenger, 19-year-old, Trent Forte. He died Wednesday morning.

Besemer was driving a 1999 Dodge Caravan, lost control of the van, sliding off the road and hitting a utility pole.

The impact snapped the pole in half

The driver reported severe pain in her hip and pelvis, as well as cuts to the forehead.

Officials believe icy roads were a factor in the crash.
