UPDATE: Father and daughter seriously injured in buggy crash

A Milford toddler and her father are in serious condition after their buggy collided with a car near Nappanee. It happened around 6:15 p.m. Friday in the 5400 block of West County Road 1350 North.

The Kosciusko County Sheriff’s Department F.A.C.T. investigators say Arlen Lehman, 51, was pulling out of a private driveway in his horse-drawn buggy. Lehman tried to stop his horse from entering the roadway, when it suddenly trotted out into the path of a 2002 Volkswagen JGS.

The driver of that vehicle, Jodi Kauffman, 23, of Etna Green, told police she slammed on her brakes as soon as she saw the horse, but her car slid into the passenger side of the carriage, causing it to roll onto its side.

Lehman and his daughter Renae, 4, were both flown to South Bend Memorial Hospital in serious condition. Lehman's wife and their two other children, ages 10 and 11, were inside in the buggy at the time, but weren't hurt. Kauffman escaped without injuries as well.

The crash remains under investigation. Alcohol is not believed to be a factor at this time.
