UPDATE: Fire rescue victim dies of injuries

SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- Two people were rushed to the hospital after a basement caught fire on South Bend's west side Thursday night.

The call came in around 11 p.m. for a residential fire at the corner of Falcon and Ford streets.

Firefighters say the homeowner was initially trapped inside, but police arriving at the scene pulled the person out. Another person had already exited the home. Both were taken to the hospital. Esther Borowski, 90, died Friday from related injuries.

The police officers who rescued the victim also went to the hospital to be treated for smoke inhalation.

The fire was contained to the basement, where it started. Most of the flames were knocked down when crews arrived, but they flared back up once they let oxygen into the home.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
