A mother and her young son are dead after a crash in LaPorte County.
Around 11:30 a.m. CDT Saturday, police responded to the 5000 block of N. County Road 600 West.
There they found Shay Heddens, 39, and Matthew Heddens, 7, both of Michigan City, pinned in a compact car, unconscious and not breathing.
Deputies say the tan 1993 Toyota Corolla was driving southbound on N. 600 West when it passed another car in a no-passing zone. Heddens then lost control and hit a tree. Police say the crash site is about half-a-mile away from the family's home.
LaPorte County Coroner John Sullivan tells NewsCenter 16 the mother and son, who were both wearing their seat belts, died from massive blunt force trauma. Sullivan said their death's were "unavoidable" based on the impact the car had with the large tree.
The LaPorte County Sheriff’s Department FACT Team continues to investigate the incident.
This is the fourth fatal LaPorte County motor vehicle crash in the last two weeks. In total, five people have died in the four wrecks.
