Elkhart, Ind. Elkhart, Ind. The 20-year-old victim in Wednesday night's shooting at the Martin's on Bristol Street in Elkhart has been identified as Krystle Dikes of Elkhart.
NewsCenter 16 spoke to a former boyfriend of Dikes, Kyle Barnett, who says the pair dated on and off for 2 years, living together at one point.
“She was beautiful,” Barnett said. “Kind-hearted, she loved children she was adamant about children.”
Barnett said Dikes had only recently begun working at the Elkhart Martin’s Super Market when the incident took place. He says Dikes was an Elkhart Central graduate, two years younger than her shooter, Shawn Bair. Barnett was unaware of any connection between Dikes and her shooter, although the Indiana State Police has not ruled it out.
“She did not deserve this at all,” Barnett said. “Out of all the people, she didn't deserve it. I don’t know what his goal was, I don't know what his aim was… mad at the world.”
Barnett said she was a music lover, an avid concert-goer and a supporter of many local bands. He says that was the mutual interest that brought them together.
“There is definitely a family grieving for her,” he said. “And lots of friends, lots of friends.”
