Three troopers were in the right place at the right time last Saturday, when an unplanned trip to the bookstore turned into a life-saving event.
The three troopers, Brian McCall, Gary Runde, and Ryan Purkiser entered Hammes Bookstore they were trying to avoid the rain after pregame traffic direction. Just before 2:30 p.m. a man approached them saying someone was on the floor and not breathing.
They found the man, Patrick Carpenter, 47, of Churubusco, unresponsive and without a pulse. They called emergency services and quickly began giving Carpenter CPR. When emergency personnel arrived at the bookstore they took over, transporter Carpenter to a nearby hospital.
As of Monday, October 14, Carpenter remained in the Memorial Hospital Intensive Care Unit.
