Tricky steps coming for Elkhart Armory demolition

ELKHART A small piece of history is safe, and the trickiest part of demolition work at the old Elkhart Armory is nearly done.

The Elkhart Truth reports that workers have finished removing the most historical aspects of the century-old building, including the cornerstones and slabs of limestone engraved with the words Elkhart Armory." They've also safely dismantled some pricey diamond windows.

One tricky part of demolition will be removing a billboard on a south wall. If it falls the wrong way, it could cut power to the traffic lights at the intersection of Main and Jefferson.

Most of the materials from the old building will be recycled for other structures.
