A trial date has been set for a Chicago man accused of fatally punching a teenager on an Indiana beach last summer, according to the Northwest Indiana Times.
James Malecek, 20 is charged with Aggravated Battery, Involuntary Manslaughter and Battery in the death of Kevin Kennelly, 17, of Chicago.
Maleck is scheduled to go on trial beginning April 1. His case is expected to take up to two weeks to present to a LaPorte Circuit Court jury.
The deadly brawl happened on the Fourth of July back in 2011, along Lake Michigan on Long Beach, just north of Michigan City.
Police say Malecek was in a fight with another group of teens when Kennelly tried to break it up.
That's when Malecek allegedly punched Kennelly in the head. Kennelly lost consciousness and died the next morning.
The LaPorte County deputy prosecutor said that, while there have been attempts to reach a plea deal, negotiations with the defense have broken down.
Malecek was allowed to remain free on the $25,000 bond he posted last July, shortly after his arrest.
