Tree crashes on top of Niles house, trapping woman

A woman is lucky to be alive after sliding out of her bed and into the yard when a tree crashed into the family's house.

Just before 5 a.m. in the five hundred block of Cass Street this morning in Niles, high winds forced a large tree to crack and fall onto a house in Niles.

Several smaller trees were caught by the large tree and toppled too.

There were five people sleeping inside the house at the time. The tree hit a bedroom on the top and bottom floor where women were asleep in both beds.

The mom sleeping on the top floor slid out of the house while it was collapsing. Also the aunt was trapped while sleeping on the first floor.

“Basically that part of the building collapsed and the bed just slid down the collapsed part,” explains Lt. Bill McAllister from the Niles Fire Department. “She kind of rode the bed down and the person underneath of course got trapped by the floor above her.”

The aunt was the only person taken to the hospital for injuries.

A rescue crew was called out to help free her after the family needed help.

Firefighters say the house can be salvaged since only one corner was damaged.
