Traffic deaths down in 2012 Lifesaver holiday weekend

AP

Michigan officials say there were fewer traffic deaths during the pre-holiday weekend this year than last.

The Michigan State Police (MSP) say that early reports indicate four people died in separate traffic crashes during the 2012 Lifesaver holiday weekend, which spanned from 6 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 21, to midnight on Sunday, Dec. 23.

This year’s numbers equal half of the number traffic deaths incurred during the 2011 Lifesaver holiday weekend.

Even though the numbers are down from last year, police continue to remind motorists not to drink and drive, to use proper restraints, and to issue caution when getting behind the wheel.

In three of the four fatal crashes this year officials say alcohol was a known factor. Additionally, three of the four victims were not wearing seatbelts at the time of the accidents.
