An accident on the Indiana Toll Road on Sunday night stopped traffic for several hours.
It happened near the 40-mile marker around 10 p.m, about 30 miles west of South Bend. Toll road authorities say the road was closed until 4 a.m., stranding many drivers.
The investigation is still underway but authorities say it appears that a passenger vehicle drove off the overpass, hitting a semi in the east bound lanes. It then crossed the median into the west bound lanes, where it collided with another semi.
The driver, 20-year-old Ryan Smith of LaPorte, has died from his injuries. He'd been airlifted to a South Bend hospital in critical condition. Both semi drivers were unhurt.
Authorities closed the road while they investigated the crash and cleared the roadway. Some drivers said it was impossible to get off the toll way and take a different route.
"A lot of people are getting out of their cars, walking closer to where it happened to get an answer,” Kris Terbush said standing outside his parked vehicle. “I've just been patient, staying busy on my cell phone. I didn't get too frustrated. I know they're probably doing everything they can, and there's no use getting angry about it. It’s just going to make things worse."
Officials don't know why Smith's car went off the overpass.
