Police: Ind. Toll Road crash a reminder to drive safe

ST. JOSEPH COUNTY, Ind. A toll road accident Saturday night is a good reminder of why drivers should slow down or stay off the road completely in dangerous weather, police say.

The driver of a van carrying two children and two adults lost control shortly before 9 p.m. near mile marker 74, crashing into the guardrail before coming to rest in a ditch.

"Definitely just slow it down," Indiana State Police Trooper Arthur Smith warned. "Just because the speed limit is 70 doesn't mean it's safe to go 70 - or anything close to that."

The van was traveling in the eastbound lane and towing a U-Haul trailer when it reportedly tried to pass another vehicle and crashed.

Police tell NewsCenter 16 weather was likely a factor, but the exact cause is still under investigation.
