As winter rolls through Indiana, The Department of Transportation is preparing for ice and snow removal.
Wednesday INDOT received 500 tons of salt at one of their LaPorte Sub-Districts alone.
The LaPorte District maintains about 5,000 of Indiana’s 30,000 lane miles of state highways, so keeping the road safe is a main priority
And representatives at INDOT say the way we drive is key to safe winter travel.
"We understand it can be frustrating driving behind a snow plow, and you're late for work,” says Matt Deitchley, Media Spokesperson, INDOT, LaPorte District. “But as we always say, when the snow starts falling, we really ask people to consider their own safety too. Leave early, do all those things you know you need to do in the snow, that a lot of people don't often do. When you encounter a plow in that situation, you'll have time to move around it safely."
And INDOT reminds us about some safe driving tips this winter:
-Plan extra drive time
-Drive slowly and carefully
-Accelerate gradually and brake early
-When you're driving behind snow plows stay at least 70 feet or 4 cars-distances behind
